The Hands of Love School Development Programme is a community-led initiative promoted by Associazione Hands of Love, supporting vulnerable children and families in rural Uganda through education, healthcare, social assistance and community development activities.
Ongoing since 2021, the programme was established to respond to the severe educational and social challenges affecting children living in conditions of extreme poverty in Nakaseke District. Building on earlier rehabilitation works carried out at St. Mary School, the association progressively expanded its activities through the construction of the new Hands of Love School in the village of Lule, inaugurated in February 2024.
To date, the programme has supported the construction of two offices, three nursery classrooms, two primary classrooms currently used for Primary 1 and Primary 2, and a dormitory facility. An additional office has been temporarily adapted to host Primary 3 classes while further expansion works continue. The long-term objective is to progressively extend the school up to Primary 7, ensuring continuity of education within the local community.
Alongside infrastructure development, the initiative finances school participation costs for vulnerable children, including uniforms, scholastic materials, meals and educational support, ensuring that children from disadvantaged households can safely access and remain within the education system.
The programme has gradually expanded beyond education to address broader community needs. In August 2024, a community well was constructed, providing reliable access to clean water for local families. Monthly distributions of food parcels, beds and mattresses support the most vulnerable households, helping to improve living conditions and reduce hardship.
In May 2025, the Medical Clinic Hands of Love was inaugurated in Senene, Kapeeka. The clinic provides first-aid services, maternal healthcare and safe delivery support, contributing to improved access to essential healthcare services in an area where medical facilities remain limited.
The programme also promotes lifelong learning and economic empowerment through adult literacy courses delivered within the Hands of Love School and vocational training opportunities for young people who choose not to continue formal education. Training pathways currently include tailoring, hairdressing and mechanics, providing practical skills that can facilitate access to employment and income-generating activities.
To strengthen food security and community ownership, Hands of Love has launched a collaborative school garden initiative involving the parents of supported children. The produce from the garden contributes to the school feeding programme and helps ensure a more sustainable supply of food for the school canteen.
The initiative views education, health and community development as interconnected pillars for creating lasting change. Through the creation of safe learning environments, improved access to healthcare, livelihood opportunities and social support services, the programme contributes to reducing barriers linked to poverty, exclusion and limited access to basic services in rural Uganda.
By combining school construction, direct child support, healthcare provision and community engagement, the initiative strengthens educational continuity while creating a stable and supportive environment for children, particularly orphans, girls and children from vulnerable households.

"In communities where many children risk exclusion from education due to poverty and distance, the school has become a safe and stable environment where learning, protection and opportunity can grow together. Today, families also benefit from healthcare services, access to clean water, vocational training and community support initiatives that help create a more secure future for both children and adults."
