Maria Ioannidi
⚽ Football
Maria Ioannidi is part of a new generation of Greek women footballers helping to expand both the visibility and accessibility of the sport across the country. Born on the island of Karpathos, one of Greece’s most remote Aegean islands, her journey into professional football reflects determination, consistency, and the belief that talent can emerge far beyond traditional sporting centres.
Beginning football at the age of five with Poseidonas Karpathou, Maria progressed step by step through the Greek women’s football system, later joining Ialysos Rhodes, Atromitos Athens, and Panathetolikos before signing with Olympiacos S.F.P. for the club’s historic first-ever women’s football season in 2025. Her pathway has made her an increasingly visible example for young girls aspiring to pursue football professionally in Greece.
Her engagement with Athletes for Change is rooted in a strong commitment to encouraging young people — particularly girls from smaller communities and islands — to participate in sport without feeling limited by geography, gender, or lack of visibility. Drawing from her own experience, she promotes football not only as a competitive discipline, but also as a source of confidence, discipline, resilience, and personal growth.
Her initiatives include:
⚽ Defensive Midfielder — Olympiacos S.F.P. Women’s Football (2025–present)
⚽ Part of Olympiacos’ historic debut season in women’s football
⚽ Panathetolikos (2024–2025)
⚽ Atromitos Athens (2022–2024)
⚽ Ialysos Rhodes (2018–2022)
⚽ Poseidonas Karpathou — began career in 2009 at age five
🌟 Recognised among the promising young players of Olympiacos Women’s inaugural squad

Her journey reflects the importance of perseverance, equal opportunity, and visibility for girls pursuing sport in smaller communities and island regions.
